Participant 8

Participant number:
8

Used Wordpress and Rapidweaver a bit but never used Drupal - is intrested in working with it.

Good quotes:
I don't know what a block is, it doesn't tell me what a block is, it just assumes I know
It lied to me, it said I can control my sites navigation menu, I can't really control it. I can do some things I guess
Taxonomy, that's a funny word
I desperately want to know how to control the position of this menu
Ahh taxonomy. That's a funny word.
Observation log:

TASK 1

participant didn't understand what clean urls were
Change title to "This is your new Drupal website"

TASK 2

"I wanna change the title" - participant
welcome text "once logged in" .... ISSUE: already logged in
user gone to admin/content/node
realizes it is a list of his content
realizes he can't add content from there, now he's looking over /admin as a whole
reading through descriptions
"create content" still hidden
(looking at admin under content management) "im confused as to why comments is the first option"
"confused why comment is the first option" - while start building a website
Got create content link
ISSUE: users tend to think pages cannot be featured on the home page
"other things I'd like to see is maybe the header and the footer, that's content"
Where did my content go?
Menu patch: glorious success.
"I'm also wondering at this point if you create something as a page is it easy to convert it to an article"
User has some expectation of a wysywyg
some?!
:) he didn't try it on the first piece
user has clicked help text
(for text formats)
Content gone after visiting help
Menu patch, great success again
user has created both pieces of content

TASK 3

"i think a block is a rectangle"
Block is like a rectangle which I can put anywhere on screen
"I don't know what a block is, it doesn't tell me what a block it, it just assumes I know"
- It don't tell me what a block is
ISSUE:"blocks administration page" and "blocks overview page" on add block page both point to the same place
user has clicked help text from block page.
user did not lose work so far when clicking back
teaser splitter seems to clear body field
another reason to remove it.
user completed the block add form, then clicked the "add block" tab..
then went back to list blocks
and was surprised not to see his disabled block
sad face
reading inline help at menu admin page
when asked if he could tell the difference between navigation and main menu, user pointed out main menu, but is unsure about navigation
although when prompted he guessed correctly. "This is for drupal and not for my site, although maybe it's for my site too"
confused if navigation is for drupal OR for his front end site
putting history link into secondary navigation
realizes he can control position of secondary menu
goes back to edit secondary menu, looking for position
cannot find it. Still clicking around menu edit forms
looking around /admin
"I desperately want to know how to control the position of those 3 menus"
(if he were at home right now) "he'd probably go get something to eat.. but he wouldn't give up"
"it lied to me, it said I can control my sites navigation menu, I can't really control it. I can do some things I guess" referring to the "menu" description in /admin
Navigation inline help lies to me - it says control your site's navigation but I can not control where to show those menus
now is back to admin -> menu ... in settings.
back to navigation
when asked to add item "didn't it say before that navigation menu items don't appear to anonymous users? that's what threw me off, I assumed you would want anyone to be able to see the history"
notices how much more 'detail rich' parenting options are in navigation. this is a side effect of the patch we applied that needs to be considered
task complete .. link goes in navigation
task complete

TASK 4

remembers editing blocks earlier. Goes straight to block admin page
"I guess I'd want to create a block, and add it to the right sidebar" "but I remember the last time I added a block I never found it"
filling out block add form
YES! found save block! and there was much rejoicing.
saved block this tiem
used drag and drop to put it in right side section
failed to hit save button
now wondering why there are no blocks on the right sidebar
went back to page, dragged it in place again, commented on there being an asterisks
then hit configure
PRESENTATION: ^
now saving settings :)
task 4 complete
BUG: block titles!

TASK 5

observation: almost every user wants to categorize content from node/add/x
user says content management sounds right
he passed taxonomy :(
then scrolls directly past taxonomy.
clicks into admin/content/node after looking at bottom of /admin
"the paint fumes I was breathing are starting to effect me I think"
^^ presentation?
ISSUES: users do not know what "taxonomy" means
^TRUE change to to something else like tags, categories OR something which is not BIOLOGY
"taxonomy, that's a funny word"
^^^ PRESENTATION
creating a vocabulary
"they want me to learn a whole new language here"
"abstract"
"sounds very abstract. sounds very powerful, but it sounds like theres a little bit of a learning curve to this"
"I just want to create categories for my page. But this looks like the closest thing I've seen"
"I still want to know what a vocabulary is. To me a vocabulary means definitions of words"
"still wanna know a vocabulary is"
We need "A vocabulary is a container of terms"
"seems powerful"
user had created a vocabularly
the user is slowly losing pep as we go on :)
definitely less excited than he arrived.
again, user entering terms in the order he expects them to appear
which makes everyone so far.
"I just created a page and i don't know where it is on site"
